European DIGIDEM Project Tackles Disinformation Through AI and Digital Education

A new European initiative led by Université Clermont Auvergne is aiming to strengthen citizens’ ability to detect disinformation in the digital age.

Presented during the Web Marathon 2026, the DIGIDEM project focuses on helping individuals “learn to verify” as deepfakes and AI-generated content become increasingly widespread. The program combines artificial intelligence tools with hands-on training to improve digital literacy and critical thinking across Europe.

Recent figures highlighted by the project underscore the urgency: 86% of Europeans encounter fake news weekly, while disinformation spreads up to six times faster than verified information. Additionally, 67% of young adults aged 18–24 reportedly share content without verifying its accuracy.

Funded under the Erasmus+ framework, DIGIDEM brings together seven partners from five countries, including organizations in France, Turkey, Portugal, Malta, Italy, and Luxembourg. The initiative integrates AI-based image analysis, detection tools, and real-world case studies to train what it calls the “next generation of critical digital citizens.”

The project also provides accessible tools—such as AI image detectors and annotated research datasets—to help users better identify manipulated or misleading content. By combining education, technology, and cross-border collaboration, DIGIDEM aims to address disinformation as a growing challenge to democratic societies.
